Vedic Astrology: the Story of Your Life
BY HOWARD “HAMSA” BECKMAN

On the journey throughout life the wise gather knowledge and seek to acquire tools to succeed. Still, so much of our own spiritual reality is hidden from our present eyes. Even our own soul’s journey, traveling for eons of time from birth to birth, circumstance to circumstance, in life after life is hidden from our view. For we are meant to concentrate on the life we lead today, to act in ways that will foster the gain of knowledge today and tomorrow, and that will develop the higher qualities of goodness (sattva) in order to become successful as righteous human beings.
Success is not simply our outer projection. Everyone must do some work in life, but what one reaps from this work is enjoyed in the next life. What enjoyment, or suffering, that accrues in accordance with the qualities of our work and actions in this life will become manifest in the next incarnation. Although action shapes destiny, action cannot completely “change” one’s destiny in the immediate sense. Tools can somewhat modify or lessen the suffering from karmas resulting from the previous life’s action, as well as to some degree exacerbate the gains of “enjoyment” earned in one’s previous lifetime.
There is only one means of opening a “window” on the karma that will manifest in our lives. That is a true and accurate Vedic astrological horoscope. For it reveals a roadmap, complete with the topography of mountains and chasms to cross, as well as swift currents of the rivers leading to the ocean of our desires, the attainment of those things we are meant to find in life. Some are worthy and some are not. Learning from our experiences is all part of the journey, and these are the building blocks of life’s greatest eventual asset, wisdom.
One general reading of the life trends, the outer personality and the basic direction of our life is enough to help point us in the right direction. “If it is predestined then why bother finding out at all?” some may ask. If one is fortunate enough to find a wise and knowledgeable astrologer that can help with avoiding pitfalls, maximizing successes and stimulating the inner “eye” then THAT is also your karma. Without beginning to probe more deeply into finding out where inner happiness can be found, though, we never find anything but fleeting satisfaction. Here today, gone tomorrow.
In school we have all had poor teachers who did nothing to stimulate us, along with the good ones that urged us on to more and more development in the arts and sciences. In life we meet with so many varied experiences and so many seeming possibilities, or choices, of paths to take. Ultimately we must make our own decisions, but a knowledgeable and experienced Vedic astrologer can see the road ahead in a person’s life. He or she can urge caution, to delay an action or to pull out all the stops and go full steam ahead.

A knowledgeable Vedic astrologer should be a guide, offering tools to awaken our spiritual “sensibilities”, if you will. Happiness in this world cannot be had without balancing the desires for outer success with the eternal need for self-discovery. We want to understand our past, act in our own best interests in the present and know we are directing ourselves towards a brighter future, in this life and the next.
Nowadays we may not use the old paper folding maps of our roads and highways very often, but how many of us would be lost without our GPS? We want to know the fastest and most expedient routes to our destinations and to successfully find places where we can find those things that we are seeking.
Each person’s Vedic horoscope tells the story of their life, but it cannot all be told in an hour, or in a single reading. At the very least having a yearly reading to look in greater detail at one’s “solar year”, or the period between one’s birthdays, can be a phenomenal tool for taking the right route and understanding the time to act for success in any and all endeavors. Any important actions should be started at a time promising the most auspicious results. When it comes to events unfolding in life, whether that is to maximize the coming boons or to minimize unfortunate events, “to be forewarned is to be forearmed”.
Only Vedic astrology can succinctly reveal the science of time, be it for us individually, for nations or for the world as a whole. It is a science that the sages say “only the wise” can know. Within its practice are the “yogic” tools to help us find success spiritually, as well as the tools and remedial measures to maximize successes materially.
